12 Zodiac Signs: Characteristics, Elements, and Meanings

All the Zodiac Signs

You probably know your zodiac sign. But have you ever wondered what actually lies behind the phrase "you're a typical Scorpio"?

Over years of consultations, I have become convinced: people aren't just interested in "what sign am I", but what it actually gives them — what it says about character, relationships, self-realization, and prospects. Let's break it down right now.

The dates are averaged: the Sun does not always transition to the next sign on the exact same day, and the difference can be 1–2 days depending on your birth year. If your birth date is close to the boundary between two signs — I will explain what to do below in the FAQ to be accurate.

What Are Zodiac Signs in Simple Words 🌌

The Zodiac is a conventional belt of the sky divided into 12 equal sections of 30° each. When people say "you are a Leo", they usually mean the position of the Sun at the exact moment of your birth — that is, which of the 12 zodiac sections the Sun was located in on that day.

Stephen Arroyo ("Astrology, Psychology, and the Four Elements") described zodiac signs not as predictions, but as a symbolic language of psychological types: each sign is its own way of reacting to life, building relationships, and making decisions. I resonate with this approach the most: I work with signs precisely as a language of the psyche, rather than a set of predetermined fates. Learn more about how astrology and Tarot interconnect →

Zodiac Sign Elements: Fire, Earth, Air, Water 🔥🌍💨💧

The first and primary level of classification is the 4 elements, with 3 signs in each:
🔥 Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) — energy of action, initiative, inspiration, leadership
🌍 Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — energy of stability, practicality, persistence, results
💨 Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) — energy of mind, ideas, social connections, communication
💧 Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — energy of feelings, intuition, deep inner experiences

Three Crosses (Modalities): Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable ⚡

The second level is based on how a sign acts in the world:
Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) — initiate new things, trigger changes
Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) — maintain, stabilize, follow through to the end
Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) — adapt, seek flexibility and variety

The combination of an element and a cross creates the unique character of each sign: Aries is cardinal fire (an explosive start), Taurus is fixed earth (slow but indestructible stability).

How a "Zodiac Sign" Differs from the "Sun in a Natal Chart" 🪐

Here is an important clarification that almost always comes up during my consultations. When people casually say "I'm a Virgo" — they are referring only to the position of the Sun. But in a full natal chart, there is also the Moon, the Ascendant, personal and social planets — each of which also resides in one of the 12 signs and shapes a person's character traits.

In a single individual, the Sun might be in Virgo, the Moon in Pisces, and the Ascendant in Gemini: three different signs work simultaneously, and together they create a unique personality, rather than just a single "horoscope sign". Read more about the topics revealed by a natal chart →

American astrologer Steven Forrest ("The Inner Sky") compared the Sun sign to the lead role in a play — vital, but by no means the only one, because the other planets contribute a whole ensemble of voices.

Frequently Asked Questions ❓

Can a zodiac sign change over the course of life? No, your Sun sign is fixed at the moment of birth once and for all. However, transiting planets continuously move around the zodiac wheel — this is where daily horoscopes come from. Want your personal weekly reading? Why do dates for zodiac signs slightly differ across various sources? The Sun does not always transition to the next sign on the exact same date — the difference across years can be 1–2 days. For accurate results, a calculation based on your specific date is required, rather than an averaged table.

Which is more important — the Sun sign or the Ascendant? It is not a matter of "which is more important", but rather different roles: the Sun represents the essence of personality and life purpose, while the Ascendant is how others perceive a person, their image, and social calling card. Is it true that horoscopes for a single zodiac sign work the same way for everyone? A horoscope based solely on your Sun sign is a simplified, mass-market format: it does not take into account the Moon, Ascendant, houses, and other planets, so it offers only a general direction rather than an accurate personal forecast.

What if I was born "on the border" between two signs? Such a boundary is called a cusp. The exact position of the Sun on that day can only be determined through a calculation specifying the exact time and place of birth — without this, it is easy to make a mistake regarding your sign.

Is it possible not to match your zodiac sign's personality traits at all? Yes, and that is completely normal: your Sun sign is only one component among many in your character. The Ascendant, Moon, and strong aspects of other planets often manifest much more prominently than the "typical" traits of a Sun sign.

Which zodiac signs get along most easily with each other? Relationships often form more easily between signs of the same element or compatible elements (fire–air, earth–water), but this is merely a general tendency — real compatibility is only visible when comparing two people's full natal charts. Why know all your signs if your horoscope sign is already known? Because knowing just your Sun sign is like reading only the book's title instead of the full book itself. The complete picture of your personality, relationship patterns, and life themes is visible only as a whole: Sun, Moon, Ascendant, houses, and planets combined.
